The fences around Milwaukee reach toward the heavens; they're a welcome mat I could have gone without seeing again. The lines of people shuffle in, each one more unhappy than the last. A chain gang composed of free men and women; their shackles merely an illusion.
Brad, Bindi and Marvis looked on, continually marveled by the sight of all these people and the large fences. The armed guards looking down with judgmental eyes don't catch their eyes nearly as much as they do mine.
I didn't like coming back here as I knew Sullivan's Fleet would be looking for me. I never did get around to giving all the details to Bindi, Marv and Brad about the guys who were attacking me. Hell, I had hoped they'd be gone by now. Part of me felt the need to inform them of my past, you know, just in case someone came looking for me and they got wrapped up in my events. If I had a group of blood thirty pirates coming after me I guess I'd like a reason.
One by one 'tourists' that were coming into Milwaukee were checked by the armed guards. They had promitive metal detector wands that scanned for anything out of the ordinary. I was never quite sure what they were hoping to find as guns were legal in Milwaukee. I had heard rumors a few years ago about people getting metallic implants. Could that be what they're searching for? I never believed it was possible by the lack of Tinkers left in Wisconsin, but I guess anything could be possible.
Marvis, I felt, was a risk. He was an impatient individual and standing for so long made him antsy. I couldn't figure out if it was boredom or excitement, but I didn't want him drawing any extra attention. After talking to Brad a bit during our walk back to Milwaukee the night prior, I found out he once spent some time here. He didn't go into too much detail, but it must not have been pleasant. His eyes darted from person to person, scoping out the region. Was he looking for someone or being cautious. All I honestly knew about this fellow was that he was trained at Fort Purgatory and he was deadly accurate with bladed weapons. It went without saying that Brad Loomis was not a man to mess with.
It took every moral fiber in my body not to ditch this group and leave them behind. I wouldn't be missed and with the hulk they'd stand a least a slightly better chance. I knew they'd die in Milwaukee. They just seemed too soft for this city. Maybe not Brad, but Marvis and Bindi for sure. Marvis doesn't seem to have a lot of experience fighting. Maybe some dumb little scuffle back on whatever farm he had come from, but nothing real. He seemed soft. Bindi, on the other hand, just seemed too innocent to me. I knew what happened to cute young girls in this city. It wasn't a fate well suited for her. Women had a short life span in this city. Suicide rates were pretty damned high.
